There are many factors that make a visit to the Morimachi and Haruno-cho area in the Western part of Shizuoka more than worthwhile. To begin with, it possesses most of the characteristics that are typical for the Japanese countryside from the picturesque rice paddies to the beautiful tea gardens. It also has a calm over it that is hard to find in the bustling megacities or the crowded tourist magnets that would usually be the most obvious destinations in Japan. Apart from beautiful scenery you will also be able to enjoy local agricultural products, find local crafts and a lot more. Spending just one day in such an environment is both invigorating and refreshing.

If you cannot get enough of green hills, make sure to make a stop at the small observatory deck at Seido no Oka. Apart from enjoying the view, this is also a good way to get a grip on the local geography.
If you are bringing kids along, a stop at the Giant Tengu is also a must. And even if all your fellow travelers happen to be grown-ups, this place makes up a good picture in any case. The great Tengu’s sandals (which represents quite an impressive piece of craftsmanship) are on display in a small wooden house to the left of the face, so make sure that you do not leave straight after taking a picture of everyone in front of the head.
While in Shizuoka, make sure to enjoy some Japanese green tea. At the Kurisaki farm a wide variety of Sencha (steamed and rolled green tea) produced from different cultivars of the tea plant are offered and the differences in taste and flavor are striking. Tea is not only a delicious and healthy beverage but the plantations also make up great scenery. So while you are at it, make sure to enjoy gazing upon the surrounding tea plantations as well.
